It’s funny how we’re back here again, seven years later. The Army has issued a major new revision called America’s Army 3, but this time it launched it on June 17. However, again, strong demand and technical issues managed to overwhelm the servers, and it wasn’t until a couple of weeks and some patches later that the game is finally in a reliable, playable state. And while there are still certainly lingering bugs that need to be squashed, this new America’s Army is a remarkably compelling and authentic team-based game. Everything looks good and authentic up close, as you’d expect. America’s Army 3 almost feels like a reboot for the Army, as the series finally undergoes the graphical overhaul to Unreal Engine 3 that the rest of the industry made years ago. Meanwhile, the game ditches the vehicle-based gameplay introduced in America’s Army 2: Special Forces to return to its infantry roots. You play as an American soldier, and while there are boot camp missions that serve as both instruction and primer to Army life, this time around they’re completely optional. If you want, you can just dive straight into the multiplayer missions. Yet, it’s worth exploring the boot camp sessions, because you can unlock equipment like special sights and better gear, though at this point the vast majority of training missions are still unavailable and just say “coming soon.” The heart of the game is in its team-based multiplayer battles. There’s no free-for-all deathmatch; everything you do is geared toward the idea of working as a squad of US Army soldiers. Again, the series’ convention works brilliantly here, as both sides in each match see themselves as US Army soldiers and their opponents as the OPFOR, or opposition force. (In this case, the OPFOR are a generic, fictional nationality.) This avoids any potential controversy about a game where you kill Army soldiers. As you’d expect, the attention to detail is incredible and about as realistic as possible. Your soldiers are armed with all the standard Army weaponry of the day, and are outfitted with the latest uniforms and gear. It’s a pretty impressive sight.
